purposes:

non-metallic inclusions in steel can reduce the mechanical properties of steel, especially in lower ductility, toughness and fatigue limit. the severe case can make steel crack or suddenly brittle fracture in thermal processing and heat treatment. non-metallic inclusions can promote steel forming hot working fibrous tissue and banded structure and make the materials have anisotropy. in severe case, transverse plastic is only half as much as that of the longitudinal, thus it greatly reduces impact toughness. therefore, it is necessary for the important uses of steel (such as bearing steel, spring steel, etc.) to check the number of nonmetallic inclusions, shape, size and distribution.
